Look Closely

Eastern Fence Lizards, Sceioporus undulates, are masters of 'hiding in plain sight'! This male was on oak tree in our front yard. He tried his very best to disappear when I started shooting. He'd slide around to one side of the tree and then back, up and down. The 'small game hunter' that I've become...I kept up with him and got off quite a few shots before I just got hot and tired and went in the house for some iced tea.

E. Fence Lizards are diurnal. In the eastern US they are mostly arboreal, in the prairie states they are more terrestrial, taking shelter under brush or in burrows. Not fussy eaters, these lizards will dine on just about any insect, spider, centipede, or snail...but they especially enjoy a tasty beetle! Yum!

If you have a bit of time, here are a few more photos taken today...
