Godzilla was put into cryogenic sleep by the human race after much battle, destruction and loss of human lives. His place as king of the monsters was no longer needed but being so large, no country was willing to chop him up into tiny pieces for recycling. He isn't really biodegradable and always seems to "wake up" from the sea to again terrorise the world (usually in the form of a new movie). It was cheaper to send him into space... and now having woken up, he's in a new world.
