Punalu’u Black Sand Beach
After another delicious breakfast shared with the geckos again we said goodbye to our wonderful B&B hosts, Mary and Bob. They surprised us with a lovely anniversary card and a bottle of sparkling cider. Thanks for a great stay!
We are now making our way south towards the Volcano area of the Big Island of Hawaii. This is where we will be staying for the next two nights. Such different landscape, but still beautiful. It was a few hours’ drive with many stops along the way!
Believe it or not, but along the way we saw a zebra and donkey as well as long horned steer and buffalo ~ all in the same fenced-in area! Not something you expect to see along the road in Hawaii!
We also stopped at the Punalu’u Bake Shop ~ the southernmost bakery in the USA. Where we just had to buy some yummy baked goods! Mmmmmm!
Not far from that was the Punalu’u black sand beach. As you can see by R’s picture there were many sea turtles here and we stayed for quite some time.
From there we drove on to Volcano, Hawaii and checked into our B&B, Halana Lodge. This is beautiful family run B&B and we had the whole house to ourselves. It was quite secluded but still only 10 minutes away from Volcanoes National Park. Which is where we headed next.
After dark you can still get into the park in order to see the “glow” of Kilauea volcano ~ so cool!
