Poipu Beach

We have big plans for today!

As I mentioned yesterday we are planning to go back to Poipu Beach to do some snorkeling. And we did!

But first we stopped at the Kilauea Lighthouse to capture the morning sun on it. Morning is a great time to visit as there are no cars or people at the lighthouse itself. The gates don’t open until 10 am. But there is an observation platform above the lighthouse that is open all the time.

So then it was on to Poipu Beach for snorkeling and catching some rays. This picture is of the beach.

If you have even been to Kauai you will know that there is only one road around the island and it doesn’t go all the way around. As I mentioned on Tuesday the road around Kauai goes from the North shore in the Princeville area down and around the southern tip and ends in the west before you get to the Na Pali coast.

The reason I am telling you this is to explain the reason for going back to Poipu beach today. We have plans for a sunset dinner cruise that leaves from Port Allen, which is on the south shore. We will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary on May 5th and decided to treat ourselves to this dinner cruise. So we wanted to make the most of the long drive around.

The 4+ hour dinner cruise takes you around the fifteen-mile stretch of rugged coastline on the northwest shore of Kauai known as the Na Pali coast. It was a wonderful cruise and the scenery was amazing. Unfortunately, I was a little nauseous by the time dinner was served so I was not able to enjoy my meal as much as I would have liked. But the crew were amazingly generous and wrapped up what I hadn’t eaten (which was most of it!) so I could take it with me. And they did the same with R’s meal too. Although he was able to eat more of his than I did.

Here we are at the beginning of the cruise! This was taken by a member of the wonderful crew.

Fortunately, the nausea was rewarded with a beautiful sunset!! The only disappointment of the cruise was we didn’t see any sea life.
