A fine 18th C woman
We are in Sandwich for a couple of days. Lobster rolls for lunch and an old graveyard to explore in the afternoon; things don't get much better than that!
The graveyard had dozens of 18th century stones carved with winged resurrection souls and the odd skull and crossed femurs, just as in Scotland.
Most of the stones were slate and consequently the carving was of a high order and still in wonderful condition. This was the finest carving that I saw, a young wife who died in 1794, heart achingly young. This could well be the finest gravestone carving that I have ever seen.
