Sherlock and Zoey
A little blurry, but they were moving fast.
Linda and I went for a walk with Sherlock and Zoey this morning - taking pictures of amazing ice and colours in the woods.
And in the afternoon Terry, LInda and I went for a hike to Uisge Ban Falls, an amazing walk along a river surrounded by huge boulders, spruce and birch. We were dwarfed by the sides of the gorge.
The falls were deafening and the water tasted of minerals and freshness.
A wonderful day.
Nature Notes
- Some of the birds are beginning to court - ravens, gray jays paired up now
- Saw a male and female white-winged crossbill couple, so brightly coloured if you see them with binoculars and the red male a first for me
- Goldfinches - a surprise this far north
- Other birds around: Pine Grosbeaks, nuthatches, boreal and black-capped chickadees, pine siskins and the hungrey blue jays taking turns at the feeder
- amazing lichens and moss, still bright and alive even in the middle of winter
- found signs of moose eating - bitten off twigs, munched branches
- Linda pointed out the moose tracks in the snow - they are HUGE, about 3 times the size of deer tracks
- found coyote scat, fairly fresh, dark - blood?
- signs of animals everywhere - red squirrel scolding, spruce needles and bits of cones on the snow
