Can you see what I see?
It is thought that the word butterfly derives from the yellow colour of the male Brimstone.
The word brimstone is, of course, the old word for sulphur - the exact colour of the upper side of the males' wings.
The underside of the wings of the male is green with a couple of brownish spots, that and their wonderful leaf shape means they are perfectly camouflaged when at rest.
Can you see it now?
The Brimstone is one of the few butterflies to overwinter in the adult form and is often the first species to be seen in spring. This is a newly emerged male that will spend the rest of the summer gorging on nectar to build up fat supplies to last it through the winter.
