A Titanic cemetery
We spent our last day in Canada at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on the edge of Halifax harbour. A permanent exhibition remembers those who lost their lives in the Titanic sinking in 1912. Of the 2,200 passengers and crew only 700 were rescued and only 328 bodies were recovered, but many were buried at sea.
This was the scene this afternoon in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery where 150 victims known or thought to be Protestants are buried. The fascination with the tragedy endures and whilst we were there a fleet of buses delivered a crowd to visit the graves. I don't imagine that it is usually this busy, but today there was a cruise liner in port and the cemetery was one of the optional tours; perhaps not the most sensitive of destinations!
The lady dressed in the blue Nova Scotia tartan was the tour guide.
Tomorrow we hope to be in New England.
