Echoes of war
We are spending a couple of days in the city of Halifax before we leave Canada and head off to New England. We started the day down at the harbour visiting Pier 21. Now a museum, Pier 21 was the point of entry for most of the ship-borne immigrants to Canada. It is a special place for me as it was also the departure point for the half million Canadians who sailed to the UK to fight in the Second World War; my father was one of them.
Further down the harbour there is another reminder of Canada's important role in the war. This is HMCS Sackville, the last survivor of the Canadian corvettes that defended the Atlantic convoys against attack by the German U-boats. She crossed backwards and forwards across the Atlantic from 1942-44.
