My Best Efforts - Year 3

By AMC

Deep Pink Lily.....with hoverflies !.......

.......I love this particular lily - not so sure about the flies though! (there is one in flight - a bit fuzzy - which I didn't notice until the picture came up on the screen!)

All my lily bulbs were moved earlier in the year and I was a bit anxious that they might suffer - a friend moved them for me and they were re-planted a little too shallowly. However, although they have not produced as many flowers as in previous years, at least they are growing!!

BOUI regarding Lilies:-

1) Pink lilies represent wealth, youth, vigour, and joy.

2) Analysis of dreaming of lilies has been done by many. It could mean that it is time to put your thoughts into action. It also suggests that the person having such dreams is in search of tranquility and possibly has a chaotic life, thus seeking for a balanced wellbeing.

3) To the ancient Egyptians, the trumpet-shaped lily was a symbol of Upper Egypt, the southern part of the country. In the ancient Near East, the lily was associated with Ishtar, also known as Astarte, who was a goddess of creation and fertility as well as a virgin. The Greeks and Romans linked the lily with the queen of the gods, called Hera by the Greeks and Juno by the Romans. The lily was also one of the symbols of the Roman goddess Venus.

4) Perhaps the most famous literary quote about lilies is from Shakespeare: “To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,….Is wasteful and ridiculous excess.”

The morning started off very dull indeed but now, at 9.20am, the sun is breaking through. The temperature is a pleasant 66 Deg.F. and I think it will get a lot higher as the day wears on.

I managed a good 5 hours pottering in the garden yesterday - and oh my, does it look better for it. If I feel ok, I may do a bit more this afternoon - but everything seems to take me SO long to do these days.

Enjoy your Friday - the weekend is almost upon us!
