Oronsay
Oronsay is an island to the south of Colonsay. It is said that St Columba landed here on his way to Iona in the 6th century. Today, the island is farmed by the RSPB. Oronsay can be reached on foot at low tide by crossing the Strand, a mile long stretch of beach. For the few days either side of the full moon, there is enough time to cross on foot and walk to the ruins of the Priory.
We took off our shoes and waded across through shallow water, visited the Priory and still had time to walk around the whole island before our exit was cut off by the tide. We saw lots of birds, including choughs, lapwings and parachuting pipits.
