Up The Alley
This alleyway was originally called Lorteburn Lane, then later changed to Free School Lane when The Perse , a free grammar school was founded and built there in 1615. Further along on the left is the famous Whipple Museum of the History of Science, built 1618 where the public can view all types of scientific instruments and models. A fascinating place which I have visited but special permission and a payment of £30 is needed for photographs to be published. Also along there is The Department of History and Philosophy of Science. On the right is St Bene't's Church dating back to Saxon times. Bene't's is a shortened version of St Benedict's, although our council had a purge on apostrophes and decided to leave them off all street signs. Eventually, a group of people went around with markers and put them all back in.
