Sculpture In The Close.

This is one of three umbrella sculptures by Harland Miller, called Nickel Gate (2010). They appeared to be laying abandoned on the lawn in Cloister Court, Jesus College, Cambridge. The brochure explains, 'Miller's remarkable copper umbrellas are the evidence standing for everything that gets left out of the efficiency story, everything that has outlived it's usefulness, everything that has been discarded. Umbrellas offer protection from the weather but also offer a limited means of self- expression. These are damaged and abandoned and seem in need of protection themselves, reflecting on vulnerable humans to which they were once attached. The lustrous copper skin gives protection and gives new value to that which has been neglected.' After reading this, I gained an understanding of the whole point of his umbrella sculptures. Harland Miller also sculpted the Crime Scene figures, on my journal a few days ago.
