Bolton Castle, North Yorkshire

Fab weather for our day at Bolton Castle, 14th century, in glorious Wensleydale. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here on 13th July 1568 for 6 months in the custody of Baron Scrope. Lady Scrope gave up her bedchamber for the Queen. Rather unusually, it had an en suite garderobe with its own septic tank. It was considered so efficient it was still in use in Victorian times. Mary's retinue of 51 people took over Henry Scrope's suite of rooms and were very well looked after. Not bad for a hostage who was suspected of threatening Queen Elizabeth.

The castle is still owned today by descendants of the Scrope family.
