Alice through the Looking Glass
Guildford has had several famous residents over the years, including Charles Dodson, better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, a writer, mathematician. Anglican deacon and photographer. He lived in Guildford, on and off, at The Chestnuts (next to the castle ruins) for 30 years from 1868 and died here in 1898. Alice through the Looking Glass was written in 1871, after Alice Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. A much loved book for so many children.
The bronze statue, erected in 1990 in memory of Lewis Carroll, is just by The Chestnuts in the castle grounds. I think it is a beautiful statue and love the folds on the dress, so clever going through the Looking Glass.
