Book Club

Last month for our book group we read The Garden of Evening Mists, written by Tan Twan Eng a Malaysian author of fiction born in Penang in 1972. The book was published in 2012 and shortlisted for several prizes. It is beautifully written and I, with the rest of my group, enjoyed the vivid description of the setting, the Malaysian jungle. His main character, a woman judge who has been tortured by the Japanese when they invaded Penang, approaches the former gardener to the Emperor of Japan, wanting him to make her a Japanese garden in memory of her sister. The main character has a conflict and tries desperately to remember facts but also to forget horrific events. An unforgettable book!
