Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Rovira i Trias, the clock tower dominates the Plaza de la Vila de Gràcia, the historic old town that only became part of Barcelona officially in 1897.

The previous evening, it being the Feast Day of Sant Joan, a procession of drummers and torches brought the square to live, as well as with bangs and flashed of fireworks let off by families lining the route. But, being a public holiday, the plaza was empty save for a parliamnet of local dogs and their owners.
