House

Work, stroll in the sunshine at lunchtime, out for curry with London colleagues at night. Stayed up too late watching Ghana vs USA.

1998 was another of those musical years where bar a couple of great guitary releases (including the emergence of the Beta Band) the music that grabbed my attention most were the emergent drum & bass scene, a return of old skool styled hip-hop and the post big beat reworking of funk and soul into broken beats. The indie clubs were still dutifully attended, but I started to find myself seeking out different clubs for a bit of dancefloor variety. It was a toss up between two tracks to represent my listening habits, the magnificent early Jurassic 5 releases vs the Jungle Brothers suddenly finding themselves relevant again. Although to be honest it could have been anything from the seminal Lyricist Lounge compilation. Let's toss a coin and go for Jungle Brothers as it's got the d&b + old skool hip hop thing going on.

Music has the Right to Children also came out this year, but I don't think I picked it up until 1999 so it doesn't count. It goes without saying that it's an album nobody should be without.
