Dog rose

Rosa canina. So this really is a Dog Rose - note the small knobbly style in the centre. It is the unofficial flower of England and often pictured as a part of heraldic symbols.

The fruit of the Dog Rose is particularly rich in vitamin C so its growth has been encouraged in the wild, especially during wartime when rosehip syrup was valued as a dietary supplement. As a 50s baby I started every day with a teaspoon full of cod liver oil followed by a teaspoon of rosehip syrup. Mmmm!
