The clarsach

This insturment will be known to most of you as the Harp, however its Gaelic name is the Clarsach. It has a beautiful sound especially when played by the equally beautiful Ingrid Henderson (she has a CD which I think is called Pretty little things) They were giving schoolchildren a demonstration on the combination of clarsach and the various types of Gaelic songs, e.g. waulking the tweed, milking songs, lullabys, drinking, sailing and various other working songs. If there was a job to be done - the Gaels had a song to go with it!

Fhir a Bhata - the Boatsman
Buain na Ronnaich - cutting rushes

and so forth.
If you are interested in the language go to www.mygaelic.com its a good enough place to start from
