Taxi drivers strike in London

Leaving Westminster Abbey yesterday on our way to the river. We'd just crossed the road when we were startled by all the scooters/ motorcyclists blowing their horns. Clearly they were trying to wake up the MP's in the House of Commons! We think these are probably the learner taxi drivers - the ones that have to acquire `The Knowledge', i.e. learn where all the streets are in central London, which takes them between four and seven years to acquire. The black cabs didn't strike until 2pm and then they managed to bring the traffic in the whole on central London to a standstill. I think many of the tourists in the area wondered what was going on.

We ate our lunch on the South Bank to the annoying accompaniment of four helicopters above our heads (talk about noisy and at least two were police helicopters). It was still very pleasant in the sunshine, even though ear-plugs would not have come amiss!

And what were we doing there? We'd been to the memorial service for the composer Sir John Tavener at Westminster Abbey. Some of the best musicians in the country performed several of his works I'm sure his family felt rightly proud.
