Bartoszyce

Our first stop was in Goldap where we drank tea at the top of an ornate and well restored water tower with a good view of the surrounding area. The Russian enclave, Kaliningrad is situated 3 Km to the North but there weren't any obvious signs of the border although it was definitely there somewhere.

An unscheduled overnight stay in Bartoszyce was sanctioned by some vehicular electrical misbehaviour. The car electrics seemed to rather die in Łankiejmy but fortunately we managed to push start and make it to a garage. Mr Ławrinowicz was most helpful and although he was closing, checked out the problem which he promised to fix the next morning and called a taxi and suggested a suitable hotel. So Hotel Bartis it was. The taxi driver was also most helpful and knew my area quite well. His aunty was even buried in Sejny.

We booked in and had a rather large evening meal which consisted of half a duck each. The lighting was a little less than adequate for the purposes of actually removing the meat from the bones, but nevertheless it was taste-wise most acceptable.

We walked round the town and briefly paused to observe the slightly less than wild rock concert that sounded better at a distance. The old town has quite an attractive old brick built centre, typical for the region which was once East Prussia.

Dusk fell as we returned from our circumnavigation.
