I came along the Riverside

I came along the riverside
looking for a place to rest.
It was that summer day in
June. Amidst the reed there
all in green so suddenly I saw
your back, an arm that slowly
waved perhaps to greet or
just to move or swing. You
want me there to join you
on the spot, and run and
ride you through the fields
of endless freedom. Come
over here you winked. You
did not care if rivers are too
deep, or ferrymen too drunk
to row. You want me there
I have to make that bow.
And now you sniff a while
and neigh because I don’t.
I’m staying on my lonely
riverside. ‘T was on that
summer day in June I
found my place to rest.
