Mad Cows?

There's been a lot about the dangers of cows in the outdoorsy press recently; but to be fair its the same at this time of year well, every year. People continue to wander through fields of animals that can weigh over a tonne - thinking "they're just cows" - but twelve people have been killed in the last six years - in Cumbria a couple of years ago we even had a vet killed whilst out walking her dogs.
Dogs can be one of the main problems - we've always found cows to be fascinated by the dog - but at this time of the year, when they've got young, that they will protect the same as any animal, the attraction can be dangerous. The simplest course of action is to avoid fields with cows in - but if that's just not possible then take a really wide berth - if things look bad then release the dog - its got a lot more chance of getting out of the way than you have.
I wasn't with Pushka when I encountered these curious young fellows - a calm steady approach was met with curiosity and snorts, we had a good stare at each other & then went out separate ways. Like most young I think the calves like to explore the world & look at the new things they encounter - this chap was harmless enough - but I made sure to keep one eye on his mum.
