Still waters
We spent the last morning of our mini break at the Arles museum with its many Roman remains, large floor mosaics and the barge dating from 50 BC rescued from the mud and silt of the Rhone and remarkably restored. We visited the famous lift bridge painted by Vincent Van Gogh. It did not seem to matter that it was neither the original bridge nor in the original location! We drove back via the Camargue where the light was exactly that which has attracted painters for many generations. The high concentration of salt on the land was obvious in places. Leaving the Camargue, we called in at Aiguemortes, an impressive fortress town from where the Crusades set off but sadly spoilt by the huge number of cafes and tourist shops.
