A gorge-ous day

Today we did the classic tourist outdoor thing to do on Crete which is to walk down the Samaria Gorge. It meant catching a bus out of Chania at 6 am and getting back to about 8 pm but was worth it.
We got to the top of the gorge by 7:15 am and the sun was just getting up as you can see. The early start means that you miss the possibility of hordes of other walkers.
The stroll starts with the steep descent in the image down to the river and then follows the river past the deserted village of Samaria and through the Gates of Iron - where the gorge narrows to a few metres - and finally out to the sea to catch a boat back to the bus at another port. 16 km in all and quite hard work at times - the swim in the sea was most welcome at the end.
