Going blue

Something is up with Raoul, my beautiful pet corn snake. He has been burrowing in the beech wood chippings on the floor of his vivarium, his eyes have gone a little milky and his beautiful vibrant skin colouring is looking a bit paler and more washed out than usual. I reckon he may be in the first stages of preparation to shed his skin. It's a phase known as going blue, from the pale washed-out colour that the snake's eyes typically become.

A skin shed is due, and it will be the first time it is happening in the six months we have had him. So I am keeping his water bowl well topped up, to ensure sufficient humidity in the vivarium, and I'm watching out for what occurs next. I'm feeling quite excited about it, but then even watching paint dry can be quite interesting if you really try ...
