Walton Cross

Not far from Hartshead Church there is the base of a large cross approximately 1.5m tall with complicated patterns on each of the four sides.
Its full height may have been as much as 5.m and the whole shaft would have been brightly painted.
There is a socket at the top which, presumably, would have held the missing top part
The style of decoration dates it to the 10th or 11th century.
Overlooking both the Calder and the Colne valleys, the monument would be visible for miles around.
