Tarr Steps

The Tarr Steps, Somerset, are a clapper bridge (from the Latin - pile of stones), possibly 1000BC. Myth has it that the devil built the bridge here and still has sunbathing, yes, sunbathing rights on the stones. Apparently, the devil swore he would kill anyone who tried to cross his bridge. Locals were terrified so they sent a cat over the bridge to see what would happen. The poor cat was vaporised. And so they sent for the vicar, who set off and met the devil midway. There was a stand-off, the vicar prevailed & the devil agreed to let people pass .......... except when he wanted to sunbathe.

It was cloudy and overcast when we visited earlier today.
