Farringdon Station, City of London

Farringdon was where the Metropolitan Railway first terminated. It was the world's first underground railway when it opened in December 1865.

The station was renamed Farringdon & High Holborn in 1922, and the building in the picture was built. The designer was Charles Clarke, who was also the architect of 25 other stations across London including Baker Street.

The building is listed. The original features include the faience lettering spelling out the station name and a 'mutule' cornice immediately under the roofline.

Farringdon Station is in a poor state, but by 2018 this station will become the only meeting point of two mighty new railways: Crossrail and the Thameslink Upgrade. So, it may look better by then.
