The Roman aqueduct at Ansignan
Today's walk took us around Ansignan into the Agly valley and into the vineyards. The aqueduct is remarkable in that it still serves its original purpose. Most of it is 9th century but one end is the original Roman structure. We crossed the river inside the aqueduct below the water course. We then walked on a five hour circular route around countryside and climbed to the summit of the Serre de Verges which was a rather delicate ascent involving security wires attached to the rock face. The views were worth it as we could see all over the Fenouillèdes, the Corbières, the Agly lake, the Pyrenees and right down to the sea. We celebrated with a group photo.
