MonoMonday: Entrances and Exits
After a morning spent pottering in the garden, we went down to the outdoor pool here for a lunch time swim.
The pool has been open since 1937, the money and land for it having been bequeathed by Alice Clark, a member of the famous shoe firm family.
In the early 20th Century, the locals used to bathe in the nearby River Brue but, as the men and boys were accustomed to swim naked, the women and girls had nowhere to swim.
Alice decreed that the Greenbank should be built to provide them with appropriate facilities and it has been a focal point of Street social life ever since, a place where lots of people know each other and can chat, sunbathe and enjoy a picnic as well as some exercise.
There's a very interesting display about the history of the pool in the children's games room this year.
Today's entry for the MonoMonday challenge hosted by Paladian.
