Holgate Windmill

Following on from yesterday's windmills blip - this is Holgate Windmill in York.

It was first operational in 1770 - built in open country overlooking the small hamlet of Holgate just outside York!

It was in use up until 1930 and as York expanded the mill was absorbed into the city. It sits on a very small roundabout in a residential area. It gradually fell into disrepair but in 2001 the Holgate Windmill Preservation Society was created and work began to restore the mill. This was completed in 2011 and it was officially opened in 2012.

It opens several times a year for visitors.

Photo is 3 bracketed shots processed in Photomatix Pro (the clouds were way too bright against the dark mill).
