Eucalyptus marginata is a large, drought tolerant tree found in the south west of Western Australia. It is usually referred to by the aboriginal name 'jarrah', also occasionally called Swan River Mahogany because of the rich reddish brown colour of the timber which is hard, termite resistant and has been used for furniture, flooring, fencing and railway sleepers.

A burl is found as a rounded outgrowth on the tree trunk or branch, resulting from stress such as injury, virus or fungus. The grain of the timber in the burl is deformed and is prized by wood turners.
