And with the lows come the highs!
I was on an office day today, but took the opportunity to go down and meet our gorgeous komodo dragon Radjah in the afternoon. After all, spending the entire day in front of the computer isn't good for one's soul...right?
Radjah is just stunning! He's doubled in size since the last time I saw him. I hadn't been inside his enclosure for a one on one encounter before so I felt very privileged to be watching his afternoon feeding and target training session. Komodo's are very smart and can be trained to respond to a 'target'. Once he touches the target or moves to the target he gets a food reward. This is beneficial for him for many reasons. First of all its mentally enriching for him, second, as it starts to cool down he is becoming less active so this is good for stimulating physical activity, thirdly, target training can be used to aid in health examinations without needing to physically hold/restrain or sedate the animal.
The Komodo dragon is the largest living species of lizard, and is found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. They grow to a maximum length of 3 metres (10 ft) and can weigh up to approximately 70 kilograms (150 lb)!
