Bibliotèque Forney

This is one of the City of Paris's several libraries which mount marvelous exhibitions of archival materials.  Today at a sister gallery nearby we visited a superb show of photographs of daily life in Paris during the First World War: Paris 14/18, La guerre au quotidien .  

All were taken by Charles Lansiaux, a self-taught photographer who was too old to fight but who lost a son in the war. The images cover every imaginable aspect of life on Paris's home front--very moving to see.

This blip is of the Hotel de Sens, now the Bibliotèque Forney, which held a vivid exhibition last year on the History of Advertising, with poster which used historical figures to publicize their products--the colorful catalogue is one of my favorite books :)  (We also bought the one for Paris 1914-18--very sober B&W.)
