Lover's Leap

Just a couple of miles down the road from our house is Lake Lillinonah, the second largest lake in the state of Connecticut. This lovely red wrought iron bridge spanning part of the lake is known as Lover's Leap Bridge. It was built in 1895, and is now open only to pedestrians wishing to travel from one area of Lover's Leap State Park to another.

The park contains a breathtaking river gorge, made famous by the Indian legend of Chief Waramaug’s beautiful daughter, Princess Lillinonah. It is said that she canoed to her death there when she believed her lover had jilted her after a visit to his people. Upon his return, he saw her in the rapids and leaped to his own demise in an attempt to save her.
