Let Robeson Sing

Tayo Aluko was born in Nigeria, and now lives in Liverpool. Formerly an architect and property developer, he now tours with his own Paul Robeson show: usually his one-man play Call Mr Robeson, but tonight a talk with pictures and songs. The story focused on Robeson's music and politics, but with a full flavour of the many other sides of this extraordinarily talented man - lawyer, linguist, footballer, orator and so much else. Half Robeson's size at most, Tayo Aluko does not have his vocal depth, but sings and speaks with the style of the man, and an old-fashioned charm.

Tayo made frequent reference to Robeson's connections with the South Wales valleys, where he first realised that white workers were also oppressed. His first trip abroad after eight years deprived of a passport was to Ebbw Vale for the National Eisteddfod. So let's play ourselves out with the Manic Street Preachers, from nearby Blackwood.
