Broadband
It may be broadband, but it comes down a very long, very narrow wire. The wire passes through many constrictions along the way. It's a miracle that any data gets through at all, let alone the vast amount that we call 'broad'.
Anyway, the nice man from BT came and plugged a thingamyjig onto our phone line and said "there's a bad connect 280 metres from the house". We went don the track and found that someone had driven over the inspection hatch, crushing the joint box that supplies 4 properties. All the wires were more or less OK, but ours was intermittently crackling. I guess the fact that it was sitting in 5 cm of water didn't help.
And now I have a brand new, ADSL modem just in case that ever needs replaced
