Early Spider Orchid

I went with 2 friends today (from Horsham Natural History Society) to do a recce of Castle Hill NNR near Brighton in East Sussex.
We walked about 4.5 miles around this beautiful chalk downland. The views were absolutely stunning, and the only downside was the driving rain we encountered for about a third of the walk which left me soaked to the skin!!
We went especially to see this beautiful plant the Early spider orchid Ophrys sphegodes. Early spider orchids are Red Data Book, and although nationally scarce there can be many when you do find them (we saw at least 60!).
They are named such because they are supposed to resemble spiders, but I feel it takes a bit of imagination to believe!
They are beautiful though and made all the uphill walking in the rain very worthwhile!
