Transport

In glorious light
The nailed figure
Rises,
A triumph
Of good over evil,
Transporting me back
To pre-lapsed Catholicism.

This amazing sculpture, Transport, by Antony Gormley in the fabulous vaulted crypt of Canterbury Cathedral was one of the many highlights of a visit to the city today. He made it from old iron nails taken from the repaired roof of the cathedral and it is suspended above the site of the first tomb of Archbishop Thomas Becket, murdered in the cathedral in 1170.

Gormley said of Transport: "We are all the temporary inhabitants of a body. It is our house, instrument and medium. Through it, all impressions of the world come and from it all our acts, thoughts and feelings are communicated."

It seemed a natural blip for Easter Sunday.
