Tiger On The Terrace

This silky, silvery moth arrived on the terrace outside this evening. There are so many thousands of moth varieties here in Australia that I had little confidence I'd identify it.

Yet, here we go - it is a Aloa marginat or Donovan's Tiger Moth (named for the butterfly and moth expert who first identified it and named it, way back in 1805. It is found only in a few coastal areas of sub-tropical Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea, so I fely quite privileged to see it. Most of the pics I could find on Google were of poor dead ones with a pin through them.

Their underbodies are a rich blood red - to match the edging and colouring around its head. A most coordinated moth!
