St Peters Church & Twmbarlwm Mountain

I got the blip shot about 9am this morning and couldn't resist it as the sun was out and it was such a beautiful day with glorious views towards Twmbarlwm Mountain (to the right of St Peters Church) A Close up is here.

At the top of the mountain, near its summit, are the remains of what is presumed to be an Iron Age hill fort, believed to have been built by the Silures, the Celtic tribe that inhabited the area before and during Roman times. These remains have led the local people of Risca and Cwmcarn to call it "The tump". There was also thereafter possibly a Roman signal point and a substantial Norman motte and bailey castle [2] which is incorporated into the eastern end of the fort, probably of early Norman construction.

St. Peter's Church. The nave and chancel with the chancel arch and south doorway are 13th century. Of the 15th century are the chancel windows and priest's doorway and the west tower with a plain parapet and tiny embattled NE stair turret. The large south porch is probably 16th century, and the window west of it is perhaps 17th century. The church and the surrounding dwellings were the original Henllys village.
