A day out in Fez

We met our local guide, Hakima, after breakfast, and set off for the Medina. The biggest, oldest, and best Medina in all of Morocco. They also have the oldest university in the world. We spent the day in the Medina, which has over 10,000 wee streets - all teeming with life and selling just about everything! Totally amazing and a complete sensory overload.

We visited the ceramic/ mosaic workshop. We watched them making the mosaics! Absolutely fascinating and the skill involved is amazing. Each little bit of mosaic is carefully chipped into the desired shape.

We also visited the famous tannery - we had a great view of the dyeing vats. What a horrible job those men have! We were handed a sprig of mint to stick under our nose when needed - which was all the time. The smell was awful.

We also visited a government run carpet co-operative ( resisted buying a carpet) weaving demonstrations (resisted buying a pashmina). Lunch in a lovely riad. It was a full on day and we're stuffed. Everywhere we went necessitated climbing LOTS of steps. And the steps here are HUGE! Jings I was puggled.

At the moment, JR and I are sitting on a cafe terrace having a coffee. It has wifi - the hotel's wifi isn't working. We're about to wander off and find something to eat, then early to bed. It's hard going, this holiday lark!

The shot today is of one of the wee shops. Lots of people didn't mind having their photos taken. Though one man shouted at me for taking a photo of his big bucket of gleaming olives.
