My, but that sun is low in the sky, is it not? At this time of year, you cannot escape the feeling that the shadows will simply grow longer and longer, until we are all in perpetual darkness.

Hah! There's a cheery thought!

What's that? What did I talk about with the child? Oh, this and that, as I usually do. On these occasions I often talk about whatever comes into my mind, whatever seems appropriate.

If I can be completely frank with you, my aim in talking is to learn a little about the times in which I find myself. Not so much from the words, you understand, but from the manner of the person I converse with, I can glean much.

You see, it all depends on how well you understand people; and I feel I'm not exaggerating when I say I am very well-versed in understanding people.

But wait; let me put my proud boast to the test.
