Young seal on the beach
Went for a wander on the beach in my hometown of South Shields. Saw this young seal pup on the beach. He seemed to be minding his own business and enjoying the drizzly weather.
In the background is the old red Herd Groyne lighthouse built in 1882. This little lighthouse still functions with light and foghorn, despite the later addition of the lighthouses of the north and south Tyne piers completed in 1895. It fortunately survived the heavy bombing of the Tyne during the Second World War. The Herd Groyne features in advertisements for Barbour coats (http://www.barbour.com/uk) as South Shields is home to Barbour headquarters, factory and warehouse.
I am hoping the lighthouse opens during the heritage days in September so I can take a peak inside.
