Margo
Here's another reason why we might vote YES.
Yesterday we lost a huge character from Scotland's political landscape over several decades. Margo Macdonald, whether you were political friend, opponent, voter, reader or watcher of journalism, was a star. As the headline says, she was just Margo .... it could only be her, 'a party of one', championing another cause, always battling for what she believed in; Margo making us smile, irritating us, filling us with a sense of injustice when Parkinson's was diagnosed, inspiring us with her courage, her generosity, her brutal honesty when it was needed; showing us what passion means.
Because it was such a 'big news day' I brought two papers into the house. The Herald has this front page, plus a double page spread, an half page obituary and an editorial all devoted to Margo; and rightly so.
The Guardian saw fit to give prime position to the long overdue retirement of an elderly TV celebrity. No space for our Margo.
On a more trivial level, BBC Tennis' resident objectionable yap, John Inverdale, did it again: "... the last time England won.... sorry, er.... Britain won .......". At least he doesn't differentiate between this kind of remark and outright sexist insult; he spreads his careless words far and wide. Needs someone like Margo to set him right.
