Gargoyle or Grotesque?

If asked, most people would call this charming little fellow a gargoyle as it sits high up on the roof of a church... but it isn't, it's a grotesque - a carved stone figure used to frighten people or to poke fun at a well known local figure. A gargoyle is a special kind of grotesque with a water spout issuing from it (usually its mouth) that is used to remove excess rainwater from the roof of the building. I'm not sure what this one has on it's tongue - whether it's meant to be a ring or a huge ulcer, but he's certainly not the most attractive of chaps!
