March 29th 2009- World Junior Surfing Championship

I woke up too late for breakfast and just caught up on the gossip from the night before and wrote in my journal before Hilde, Mia, Sara, Tara and I took a trip to watch the World Junior Surfing Championship. After a short bus journey down the road, we took a taxi to the competition – squeezing all of the girls into the back of the cab, making the driver slightly uncomfortable as he was worried what the police would think of the squashed circumstances. We arrived at a Military Base, quite surprised that this was the venue then headed to the beach to see the show.

The World Junior Surfing Championship was not what I would have expected from an international skill level tournament. I was expecting tension in the air, nervous looks and some apprehension as to how people would perform. But not with surfing. It was such a relaxed and lovely atmosphere – countries mixing, people practising in such confined spaces on the waves and some of the hottest girls I have seen (the Argentinean supporters were particularly attractive). For lunch I had a hot dog and a chicken kebab and I got to see about 10 minutes of Brazil vs Ecuador but then we had to start heading back – which took so long I missed the rest of the game and the sunset. But blip for today had to be the Championships – here are a few of the competitors going for it.
