St. Philip's Church, Salford...
One of the prettiest churches in Manchester is St. Phillip's in Wilton Place. Well technically it's in Manchester's twin city of Salford but I'm afraid I'm one of those people who can't really understand the idea that Salford is a separate city.
When this church was built in 1822, this part of the city was one of the best addresses. If you look around the church there are still some grand houses, sadly fallen on hard times. The church is in the Greek Revival style with this unusual semi circular entrance. It is a copy of one of those churches you find in one of those elegant, tree lined squares in the nicer parts of London.
It's less than 10 minutes walk from the busy city centre but it feels like a completely different city. If it was in the city centre, people would be queueing up to have fashionable, well dressed weddings here like the do at St Ann's Church on the eponymous square. But things are looking up. This part of Salford is seeing a lot of redevelopment as people look for new places to develop close to the city centre. The apartments being put up may not have the elegance of the Regency town houses but they are bringing people to live here and that will be good for this pretty church.
